How to Commission a Portrait

Commissioned portraits are done from good quality photos showing closeup of facial features, eye color, and details.  Digital photos in the highest resolution jpeg form, sent via email, are preferred, but I can work from printed photos sent through regular USPS mail. I will return your printed photos when the work is complete.  I like to have several photographs for reference, so I can get a good idea of eye and fur color.  Red-eye is not a big problem, but I will need additional photos to get the correct eye color. All photos must be your own or guaranteed free of copyrights. In addition, if you'd like to tell a story about your pet, that will certainly help me in capturing a true likeness (plus, I just love to hear stories about your beloved pets!).

If you live in the Louisville/Lexington, Kentucky area, a photo session can be arranged. This gives me a chance to get to know the subject better. Sessions generally take place in the subject's home or a favorite location, where he/she feels most comfortable. There is no extra charge for this.

Portraits can be done in several mediums: oil, acrylics, pastel, graphite pencil or colored pencil.  My medium of choice is oils or acrylics.  Portraits are done on quality canvas with gallery wrapped edges, or acid-free paper, and are unframed unless requested.  There is a charge of $25 for each additional subject and for extensive background work. Before starting your portrait, I will send you a preliminary rough draft for approval.  I will also send a photo of the finished portrait before it ships.

A 50% deposit is required upon commission along with a signed contract.  Balance is due on completion and before the work is shipped.  Portraits are guaranteed to meet your satisfaction or the deposit will be completely refunded.

Turnaround time is usually 4-6 weeks, depending on size of the piece and medium.  If you would like a painting in time for a special occasion, please let me know so I can check my workload. I don't want to disappoint you!

I retain copyright on all artwork I create, and have the right to use the image for promotion purposes, reproductions, etc.  Artwork and images may not be used or reproduced without my written permission.
